In 1621, the first slide rule was invented by the English mathematician William Oughtred. The slide rule (called 'Circles of Proportion') was a set of rotating discs which were calibrated with Napier's logarithms. One of the first analog computing devices, the slide rule was used commonly (in a linear array) until the early 1970s, when hand-held calculators started to become more popular.
